Things to Know

This full-day workshop involves hands-on work with wood, traditional tools, and carving techniques. Some physical strength and hand dexterity are helpful, though the experience is designed to accommodate various skill levels. Participants should be comfortable with woodworking tools and getting sawdust on clothing. All materials and tools are provided, including wood, carving tools, and safety equipment. You should wear comfortable work clothes that can get dirty, closed-toe shoes, and bring work gloves if you prefer. Safety glasses will be provided. The workshop includes working on a communal canoe project, and you'll create a small carved paddle to take home. The workshop moves at a steady pace with breaks for learning, cultural storytelling, and traditional songs associated with canoe building. Your finished paddle will be ready to take home at the end of the day. Because this workshop involves sacred cultural practices and traditional techniques passed down through generations, participants are asked to be respectful, mindful, and open to learning from master craftspeople who share their knowledge and stories. Workshops may be adjusted based on material availability or weather conditions for outdoor portions. Come prepared for a full-day, hands-on experience that blends craftsmanship, cultural learning, and connection with ancient boat-building traditions.
